Expeditions of the Moscow school
of field linguistics
To the memory of Aleksandr Kibrik (1939-2012)
The last decades see the pace of extinction of the world’s languages dramatically increasing. In reponse to this global challenge, the efforts to study and document the existing languages in the field multiply, and the numbers of field linguists grow.
The Moscow school of field linguistics has been accumulating invaluable experience of fieldwork for more than half a century and is proud to share it with you on these pages.
Here you will find data on linguistic field trips since 1950s up to the present. Researchers from several institutions invested much of their effort into studying the languages of Russia and other countries, even from other continents. It was first (since 1950s and 1960s) the Institute of Linguistics of Russian/Soviet Academy of Sciences and the M.V. Lomonosov Moscow State University, later on joined by the Moscow State Linguistic University, Russian State University for Humanities, and the Higher School of Economy.
The expeditions of the Moscow school reach far North, East and South. This portal presents diverse materials from these expeditions such as succint fact sheets, illustrative audio, video, photo, as well as bibliographic data and full-text publications.
The web portal "Expeditions of the Moscow school of field linguistics" has been created with financial support from the Russian Foundation for Humanities, grant #15-04-12052.
